Details of the Artistic Assistance Application

  • The next Professional Development deadline is Monday, April 1, 2013.

  • The next Project Development deadline will be in Fall 2013.

Artistic Assistance is an electronic upload application.  Do not download the attached worksheets and submit them by email.  Follow the instructions below in order to submit.

Alternate ROOTS is proud to announce that we no longer require cash or in-kind matches for Artistic Assistance awards in either the professional development or project development category.

OVERALL STIPULATIONS
  • Applicants must be VOTING MEMBERS in good standing (dues current) and should be actively involved in Alternate ROOTS activities (i.e., attendance at Annual Meetings, involvement with rhizome activities through regions, etc.).  Note:  Artistic Assistance is not available to Introductory Members or Satellite Members.
  • Members should demonstrate how their work is consistent with the ROOTS mission.
  • A conflict-of-interest free panel of arts professionals, to include one or several members and staff of Alternate ROOTS, will review applications.
  • Members may not apply for both Professional Development and Project Development in the same round.  If you have received a professional development grant previously, you must wait one calendar year before applying again.

INDIVIDUAL AWARD STIPULATIONS

Professional Development

  • Members may receive only one Artistic Assistance Professional Development award per year (i.e. if you receive a grant in March of one year, you must wait until the following March to apply again).
  • Members may be in Professional Development and Project Development cycles concurrently (e.g., if you receive a Project Development award in October, you can apply for Professional Development in March).
  • Funds are expected to be resources beyond the member’s usual association (i.e., should be money that you are unable to raise otherwise for your professional development).
  • Award amounts for professional development range from $250 - $1000.
  • Project window for professional development is nine months.
  • There is no longer a matching requirement for this award.  In other words, a $500 award can fund a $500 project.
  • Artistic Assistance Professional Development is not project/product-dependent.
  • Recipients cannot use Artistic Assistance to pay themselves.
  • Expenses already incurred within the last 90-days toward this specific request for the artists’ professional development may be used as matching funds. (Evidence must be submitted with the application.)

    Project Development

    • If a member receives an Artistic Assistance Project Development award, s/he must take the next year off before being eligible to apply for Project Development again.
    • Awards for project development range from $500 - $2500.
    • Project window for professional development is one year.
    • There is no longer a matching requirement for this award.  In other words, a $500 award can fund a $500 project.
    • Recipients cannot use Artistic Assistance to pay themselves.
    PROGRAMMATIC PRIORITIES
    • In order to maintain membership equity throughout Alternate ROOTS' Artistic Assistance Program, members who have not previously received funding and first-time applicants to the Artistic Assistance program will be given priority throughout the selection process.
    REPORTING AND REFLECTION
    • Details and requirements of final reports can be found on the final reports page here.
    WORK SAMPLES & APPLICATION FAQs
Work samples must be digital and must be attached to the application itself.  Hard copies of work samples will not be accepted in the office.  Here are some helpful hints for attaching digital work samples to the application:
    • URLs:  You can point panelists to your website, YouTube, Mp3Tunes or other websites that contain examples of your work.
    • The ROOTS website:  If you don't have your own website, might we recommend that your artist profile on the ROOTS website is a good place to start?  Feel free to point panelists there as it has the capacity to host lots of information and upload up to five images.
    • So how do I get these URLs into my application?  Easy!  Just copy and paste them into a Word document, describe what you want the panelists to pay attention to, and then save that document into the Work Samples section of the application.
    • You can also type this part into the introductory box of the application where you describe the project and just say, "For more information about me / my project and to view work samples, please visit www.describingmyproject.org."
    • If you are preparing your application for the first time, please feel free to call the office for advice, or view our Artistic Assistance mentor page to contact someone who has gone through the program/application process before.
    • Please make sure that you choose your work sample wisely.  Brevity and clarity are very powerful in this scenario.  Panels have limited time to review applications.  Limit video to 5 minutes; a few clips of no longer than one minute is even better.  If your sample is longer, please point panelists to the minute and second where you’d like them to begin watching.
