Independent Film Festival and the Wilmington Community

Objectives
  • Listen to filmmakers interests and needs in engaging community with the topic of their film.
  • Design and facilitate activities appropriate for the filmmakers community engagement.
  • Train artists and activist on strategies for future community engagements.

‘Works in Progress’ Films:

Whistling for Sheep, a project about ovarian cancer, figuring out how to tell the story and who to tell the story for, at the UNCW Communications class and the Lower Case Hospice.


Bringing it Home about the positive capabilities of Industrial Hemp and the political push to make it legal in the US.

American Promise, a film that follows two African American boys, their families and their education from kindergarten through high school. The community outreach Learning Exchange was done through a partnership with the ‘Working Films’.


Omari Fox and Hope Clark worked with filmmakers to develop Learning Exchanges for these three ‘Works in Progress’ documentary films in the Wilmington community and at the festival. They also facilitated ‘extended talk-backs’ after 4 finished documentary films showings.

Semper Fi with activist Sarah Gilliam at Cape Fear River Watch about the fight to get health care and notification for military folks affected by toxic water at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC.


Fambul Tok with the filmmaker about a healing process after Sierra Leone’s Civil War.

Certain Proof with the filmmaker about the education system for children with cerebral palsy.

Defining Beauty with the star of the film about Ms. Wheelchair America.
