Support a founding ROOTS member in her battle with cancer.

ROOTS is a family, and sometimes it's important for family members to help one another.

Jo Carson, a founding member of Alternate ROOTS, is in the midst of a pitched battle with colon cancer.  You can help.

Jo has been a self-supporting artist for more than 30 years.  Since quality, affordable health insurance is extremely difficult for independent artists to obtain, the insurance coverage Jo has is utterly insufficient to her current need – her policy will cover her surgery, but not the extensive chemotherapy and radiation she is currently under-going.

This is both an individual issue – one of the nation’s leading community-based artists is facing a mountain of medical expenses – and a systemic issue – independent workers with any kind of pre-existing condition are consigned to crappy, over-priced health insurance.

Jo needs your help. A contribution of any size will go directly from ROOTS to Jo, to help offset the mounting expenses of fighting cancer.  We need Jo’s voice and her words and her work with communities.  Jo needs to be able to receive the appropriate health care to address a dire medical situation for which there is no simple remedy.

Race, Culture, and Aesthetics: Atlanta

Image:
BethanyWed, 06/16/2010 - 17:07
Short Description:
Atlanta, GA Race, Culture and Aesthetics October 8-10, 2010 Curator: Charmaine Minniefield How do race and culture influence our aesthetics and processes as ensemble theatre-makers? In partnership with Alternate ROOTS, Micro-Fest: Atlanta will go deep into exploring how participating theatre-makers answer this question. This festival will kick-off with a Town Hall style dialogue engaging festival participants to immediately begin defining their answers to this question. Over the course of 2 and half days festival participants will be asked to respond to a series of questions about the ways culture influences creative choices. How ensembles are making plays and creating new work that defies genre will be addressed through the lens of race and culture. Performances, Master Classes, Creative Labs, and Artist Dialogues will provide the framework for individual examination and public discourse on race, culture, and aesthetics. Curated performances for Atlanta have not been selected at this time.
