• Maintaining the theatre’s strong multi-racial audience base while attracting new and younger audiences.
• Providing additional educational opportunities in the community.
• Growing the number of performances for each production
• Increasing professional opportunities for the theatre’s artists.
POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Artistic Director is expected to articulate a clear and exciting artistic vision for Jubilee within the theatre's desired focus on work that illuminates and celebrates humanist stories and experiences through an African American point of view and speaks to the theatre’s multi-racial audience. Critical to the success of this vision is the willingness, desire and ability to identify and produce works that can relate to and stimulate current and future audiences.
The Artistic Director is expected to provide clear direction in the establishment and maintenance of good working and team building relationships with guest and Fort Worth-based artists; artistic, production and administrative staff; Board members; and volunteers - all within the context of insuring the success of the theatre's artistic mission - and must recognize, understand and welcome the necessity of doing so.
The Artistic Director oversees all artistic aspects of the operation of the theatre as well as actively representing, with the Managing Director and Board leaders, the theatre and its artistic activities to the Dallas-Fort Worth region and the national theatre community. Clarity in the execution of the theatre's work, on stage and off, and the ability to evoke and maintain a commonality of purpose will be key. The Artistic Director will be someone who enjoys interacting with funders, subscribers, board and staff.
The Artistic Director reports to the Board on all artistic matters and is expected to work closely with the Board and in partnership with the Managing Director to achieve short term expectations; to provide clear and thoughtful long range planning; and to participate fully in the creation and development of the effective utilization of theatre’s recently renovated home.
The Artistic Director preferably will be a stage director who, through his or her own work and experience in the African American community, can make a particular statement in keeping with the overall direction of the theatre. Just as important will be the ability to articulate that statement, excite others about it, and draw together artists to help to achieve it.
The Artistic Director is expected to determine Jubilee's season of plays and musicals and to propose and work towards building the artistic, production and administrative support and resources needed to realize the theatre's goals and to give guidance toward the continued development of the theatre as an important and respected Fort Worth institution. S/he hires and is responsible for the work of all artistic staff and is responsible for the quality of all productions on Jubilee’s stage.
QUALIFICATIONS
The chosen candidate will have a passionate commitment to the theatre. S/he will possess an artistic vision and interest encompassing a broad range of repertory, style and point of view while maintaining the theatre's chosen focus on the development and presentation of work based on the African American experience. S/he will have shown successful involvements in and responsiveness to both a vibrant theatre company and the public and truly enjoy the prospect of actively engaging with these constituents. In addition, the Board will be assessing candidates' ability to attract artists and projects so as to continue and broaden the theatre's work, particularly in the creation of new plays and musicals and the nurturing of playwrights.
• 1. The Artistic Director will have a comprehensive knowledge of theatre, particularly African American theatre work, and will be experienced in the requirements of selecting and producing theatrical work. S/he will be expected through his or her own work and/or program choices, to make a particular artistic statement while developing and focusing, with the Board, the overall direction and mission of Jubilee.
• 2. S/he will have a history of achievement in the theatre. A previous role in the leadership of a theatre company, though not necessarily at the level of artistic director, is strongly preferred.
• 3. S/he will have solid and proven leadership skills and be a thoughtful and accessible leader who can attract and retain talented artists and staff by creating a working environment that respects and supports the individual's artistic integrity and needs, while encouraging and challenging individual and collective artistic growth and achievement.
• 4. S/he will have a working knowledge of day-to-day fiscal management and accountability, combined with an ability to create and oversee artistic budgets on an annual and multi-year basis. An appreciation for the role of an Artistic Director in fundraising, marketing and community relations is essential.
• 5. S/he will have strong interpersonal skills and be perceived as a driving force behind the continued artistic development of Jubilee, the imaginative use of the theatre's performance space and the underlying connection to Fort Worth’s artistic community. A sincere willingness and interest in fully participating in the life and activities of the region’s arts, business and cultural community is critical.
