2011 C/APP Call for Proposals
The 2011 C/APP round is closed, but you can read the call for proposals and know what that looked like below. There is currently no new deadline for C/APP scheduled due to organizational strategic planning. Check back in early 2012 for new updates.
Now more than ever C/APP is an opportunity for artists to work together to enhance relationships among and between diverse communities that are being deeply impacted by social and economic injustices. Community Partners for C/APP projects may be established social services, presenting organizations, a group of teachers, neighborhood associations, an extended family or any group, large or small, institutionalized or temporary, involved in reaching out to highlight existing local assets in the struggle for social justice.
Project Support (up to $10,000) – This application is for projects from the development through the production stage and needs the written commitment of partner(s) and a timeline describing the scope of the project. Funds must be matched dollar-for-dollar with at least 50% cash and no more than 50% in-kind support.
Funding Period: 2011 C/APP Application timeline will be as follows:
All projects must take place within the Alternate ROOTS service area, which consists of the following: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington D.C. In preparation for ROOTS 35th anniversary festival, this round of C/APP will make special consideration for projects taking place in Baltimore, Maryland.
Criteria
General Eligibility
C/APP grants support partnerships between artists or artist-run organizations with community partners as described above. Members and/or organizations that have defaulted on past Alternate ROOTS grants must first contact the ROOTS office to determine eligibility.
Artist(s) Eligibility
The artist or artistic company collaborating in this project must be a voting member of Alternate ROOTS in good standing. If you are not sure if you qualify, please contact Shannon Turner, Manager of Programs and Services, at 404-577-1079 or email her at shannon@alternateroots.org.

Successful projects will address one or more of the following:
Outside Evaluation/Mentor
Each proposal must name a mentor to be a sounding board and advisor during the project and to provide a written evaluation at its conclusion. The individual must be familiar with collaborative work and/or the partnering of community organizations and artists. Alternate ROOTS will provide a $500 stipend toward these services. Each application must include a letter of agreement from the mentor and the mentor's resume. Resources for Social Change members are available to help all applicants with their application and project. Please make sure to contact one of them before you send your application.

- August 15, 2010: Application available to voting members via online and snail mail (by request)
- October 15, 2010: Application Due Date
- November 12, 2010: Conflict of interest free panel meet to review applications.
- November 29: Awards announced.
- January 1, 2011: Earliest project start date

- Proposals will be evaluated along the following criteria:
- At least one artist or community partner with a demonstrated commitment to community-based work.
- Clear process used to determine goals or to start the collaboration and partnership .
- A clear indication that the project activities are realistic and feasible with the timeline.
- Demonstrated artistic ability of all artistic partners and a clear indication of the art that may be produced.
- Understanding of your own criteria of evaluation for this specific project
- Appropriate compensation to individuals involved in the project.
- Opportunities for the inclusion of local artists to engage in the project (if applicable).
- Explanation of how the assets of the various partners will be highlighted and used in the collaboration and/or how the needs and concerns of the community will be addressed.
- Detailed plans for documentation.
- The potential for long-term impact and/or continuation of the creative experimentation.
- Ability to prepare a presentation or progress report for ROOTS Fest 2011: Many Communities, One Voice (June 2011)

- Uprooting racism or other forms of oppression
- Serve disenfranchised communities.
- Engage diverse segments of the communities.
- Research or create new artworks or collaborations with a community, an organization, an individual and/or other ROOTS members in the region.
- Develop new relationships or strengthen existing ones between artists/arts organizations and non-arts groups.
- Create cultural exchanges between/within immigrant communities.
- Initiate artistic exchange between communities.
- Provide creative outlets for youth.

Reporting Requirements
- Alternate ROOTS will pay the Fiscal Agent 75% upon receipt of the signed contract and approved budget, outline of planning process, signed Statement of Goals, and a detailed schedule of activities.
- The final 25% will be paid upon receipt of a complete Final Report which will consists of a narrative, financial report, project journal, project documentation (must include photos), an article of 800 words or more for publication in the Alternate ROOTS Journal, and some form of project evaluation to be submitted no later than 30 days after the project end date.
