C/APP Grant Re-Imagining

In the spirit of "re-birth", the RSC/CAPP workgroup is reviewing all
aspects of the C/APP grant, including gathering applications, process
of selection, ROOTS role in the facilitation of the Community Arts
Partnership Projects, and other parts.  We need some help evaluating
the process as it has been so far.  We are starting off with two
questions:

1.  Have you applied for a C/APP grant previously? If so, can you
let us know how the process was for you (opportunities for deeper
discussion, great moments)?

2. If you have not applied, why?

This
will help build a foundation for the conversation as we continue to
re-examine this important grant.  Your contribution is vital.  Thanks!

C/APP Grant Re-Imagining

1. I have not previously applied for a C/APP grant.

2. I didn't have a reason to apply for the grant. I didn't have a full
understaning of the C/APP grant, what it did, who it was available to,
and how it works.

1. Yes, I have applied for and rec'd C/APP grants twice now. The first time the C/APP grant was only for 1,500. and I combined it with three other grants to support a multi-generational site performance project, The Morningside Environmental Performance Project. That was in 1997. This year I helped the Madison Morgan Cultural Center in Madison, GA to write a C/APP grant proposal and they will be receiving 5,000. to help support my partnership with their community - which is actually going on this month, as I write this: Sept. 2009. This will also be a multi-generational object theater project. [Object Theater: picture large-scale puppetry minus the puppets.]
Comment: I participated in the original C/APP design work group during 1993-94 and attended the C/APP Revival in Durham where we were able to visit and assess several C/APP projects that were all going on in the Durham area. The number one issue impacting the ability of C/APP artists to work in a way that manifests the RSC principles, that I've seen, is simply: partnership duration. It takes time to work in a way that honors these principles and establishing relationships and trust cannot be rushed.

I have not applied for a C/APP grant.

I did not feel ready to do the kind of work required for such a project in my community. It may happen. The Learning Exchange that I hosted in my community did not lead to developing the kinds of partnerships needed to carry out the kind of C/APP project I was interested in.

C/APP

I have not personally applied for a C/APP grant but have participated in events funded, in part, by a C/APP grant - 1 in DC, one in MD, and one in Baltimore. The first two events were community learning exchanges that were effective in spreading the word about Alternate ROOTS, allowed for a rhizome activity in our region, and provided the platform for ROOTS members and area community members to have meaningful dialogue about racism and other community issues. These two events also included informal performances of work that addressed aspects of social change. The event in Baltimore took place over a week and was a festival with more formally presented performances as well as workshops. This event was effective in the same way as the previous two but had a larger audience due to the length of time and amount of activities.

I have not applied myself as it has been my understanding that each region only receives one C/APP grant. So instead, I chose to take on a role of support and participation.

My Group Choices

Hello - At this time, I've chosen to become active in only one group -the technology and communication group. I hope in the future to rejoin the RSC group. The RSC principles inform everything I do.

C/APP mentor role

I have not applied directly for a C/APP grant; but this year I was invited to serve as a mentor for a C/APP endeavor ... I am still learning what that means and how I may serve. And I am trying to use the Alternate ROOTS web site to explore and research ...
