Visual Artists' Scholarship Nomination Form

Alternate ROOTS is an organization based in the Southern USA whose MISSION is to support the creation and presentation of original art in all its forms, which is rooted in a particular community of place, tradition or spirit. As a coalition of cultural workers we strive to be allies in the elimination of all forms of oppression. ROOTS is committed to social and economic justice and the protection of the natural world and addresses these concerns through its programs and services.
Alternate ROOTS was founded in 1976 by a group of extraordinary theatre artists. Today, we are a creative network dedicated to providing programs and services for more than 350 activist artists of all disciplines. Now, thanks to generous funding from the Joan Mitchell Funding, there is an initiative within ROOTS to:
  • Increase the presence and visibility of visual artists
  • Generate dialogue about the visual arts for social justice perspective and process
  • Create appropriate ways to exhibit the works/works in progress of visual artists at the ROOTS Annual Meeting
  • Have a clear sense of how visual artists might connect with / find entry into the new ROOTS strategic plan
  • Make visual artists feel welcome, supported and that their work for social justice is relevant to ROOTS’ mission and programs
Alternate ROOTS is pleased to extend a call for nominations of visual artists to receive scholarships to attend the ROOTS Annual Meeting at Lutheridge in Arden, North Carolina August 5-11, 2013. • Free registration for the Annual Meeting ($350)

Best Practice Warning
Because these forms can be tricky, it is recommended that you copy and paste the questions into a Word document that you save your answers in and come back to paste them into the form when you're ready for upload. That way, if something goes kablooey (technical term) with the form before you're done, your work will not be lost.
*Note: Nominators must be voting members of Alternate ROOTS.
(Please select the media/medium that best describes the artist’s work)
Nominators/mentors will be responsible for introducing scholarship recipients at planned presentation times during the Annual Meeting.
Work Samples & Photos
Please upload 3-5 work samples. Images must be JPEG files at 300 dpi, audio files must be MP3, time-based media can be submitted via links from which the work may be viewed online (youtube, vimeo, etc). To upload a URL, simply copy and paste the URL into a Word document, include any instructions and information about what we will be seeing (e.g. "This is a video from my gallery opening of kinetic sculptures in Charlotte, NC in December 2010. Please fast forward to 01:23 to witness an amazing moment between the audience and a piece...") Please include a work sample summary sheet in Word, which provides the following information for each work sample: • Title • Medium/Media • Dimensions • Date Work samples must be submitted online. If you’re having difficulty with that process, please contact Shannon Turner at 404-577-1079 for technical support. Please contact Ashley Minner with any other questions or concerns at 410-245-4303 / ashley.minner@gmail.com. Note: Nominees are welcome but not required to bring work to the Annual Meeting.
