Work Groups
As a member-led organization, Alternate ROOTS has many structures and entry points for member participation, including these member-led Work Groups. Some Work Groups are ongoing; some exist for a limited period and are focused on specific projects.
All ROOTS members are encouraged to get involved in Work Groups.
To do so, please reach out via our contact form and select “Work Groups” as the subject line. All Work Group meetings are also listed on our public calendar and in our monthly Member News.
50th Anniversary Work Group
The 50th Anniversary Workgroup will assist in planning ROOTS 50th Anniversary that is coming up in 2026-27! This milestone will include a celebration, but will also serve as a catalyst for a robust fundraising effort which will ensure our financial health and sustainability in the future.
Finance Work Group
The Finance Work Group meets quarterly to review financial statements, and assist with governance and policy decisions around the finances of the organization. Members who are timid about financial statements are highly encouraged to participate – this is a great learning opportunity!
Fundraising/Development Work Group
The Fundraising/Development Work Group (aka the Alternate ROOTS Get Money Project) aims to harness our community’s collective brilliance when it comes to raising money for ROOTS.
Heal/Teal Team
The Heal Teal Team is a group of ROOTS healing artists and organizers building around the ideas of community care, abolitionist healing, and the cultivation of joyful and regenerative practices that nurture one another and our relationships to the earth. We invite all those who identify as healers or even those who do not, to join us in monthly conversation and action.
ROOTS Week Work Group
The ROOTS Week Work Group works with staff to plan and execute our signature event, ROOTS Week. This group meets as needed throughout the year, with more frequent meetings held in the months leading up to ROOTS Week.
UpROOTing Ableism
The UpROOTing Ableism Work Group brings together artists of varying abilities to create initiatives and deepen analysis that directly address ableism within ROOTS culture. We invite all members to join us in creating new language, ways to make art, and ways to be that make room for artist and organizers of all ability levels.
Values and By-laws Work Group
Values and By-laws Work Group was formed to review and strengthen our guiding documents and organizational practices – including our Values, Community Agreements, Principles of Community Engagement, and By-laws. Through deep reflection and engagement, this Work Group aims to propose clear and timely recommendations for a formal set of ROOTS values and changes to ROOTS’ current By-laws that center member ownership and participation.
YOOTS: Youth At ROOTS!
YOOTS (Youth at ROOTS) Work Group is led by ROOTS members between the ages of 13-35 as well as members beyond that age range who work with and support young artists and organizers. YOOTS aims to support creative and leadership development of young artists while cultivating a space where they can be in creative community. YOOTS seeks to be an intergenerational space that incorporates all and centers young people.
