In a world full of challenges, art can be a source of healing. At Alternate ROOTS, we recognize the power of creative expression to process trauma, build resilience, and foster connection. This belief drives much of our work and the projects we support.
ROOTS member Maria Gomez recently facilitated a series of art therapy workshops for survivors of domestic violence. Using painting, poetry, and movement, participants were able to express emotions that words often failed to capture. The results were profound—many described the experience as transformative and empowering.
This focus on healing extends beyond individuals to entire communities. After a natural disaster devastated parts of Mississippi, ROOTS artists collaborated with locals to create a series of community quilts. Each square told a story of loss, hope, and rebuilding. The project brought people together, fostering a sense of solidarity in the face of hardship.
Art as healing is also central to our cultural exchanges. Through performances and storytelling, our members explore themes of identity, belonging, and justice. These interactions not only heal but also educate, sparking meaningful conversations across diverse audiences.
At Alternate ROOTS, we believe in the transformative potential of art. By supporting projects that center healing, we continue to cultivate a space where creativity and care intersect. It’s this commitment that makes our work so impactful.
