ROOTS Weekend: Jackson Visual Art Exhibition

Alternate ROOTS is coming to Jackson, MS, for ROOTS Weekend: Jackson, November 8-11, 2018! Through the theme of RENEW!, we’re digging into the what it takes to envision and enact a true people’s democracy – one where active, creative community members work together, building collective strategies that allow equity and justice to thrive. Jackson’s contemporary and emerging art gallery AND will host an exhibition of visual art works in conversation with this conference theme. This exhibition will hang beyond the end of the conference as part of the exhibition calendar of AND. The exhibition dates will be November 2nd – December 5th.
AND is an independent, artist-run space for contemporary and emerging art in the Midtown Arts District of Jackson, MS. AND is interested in the accessibility of new and emerging art, facilitating creative experimentation and discussion, and supporting emerging artists and disciplines.
Alternate ROOTS is an organization based in the Southern USA* whose mission is to support the creation and presentation of original art, in all its forms, which is rooted in a particular community of place, tradition, or spirit. As a coalition of cultural workers, we strive to be allies in the elimination of all forms of oppression. ROOTS is committed to social and economic justice and the protection of the natural world, and addresses these concerns through its programs and services.
To submit work along this theme for consideration, please send a Word Document or link to a Google Document titled with your First and Last Name followed by ROOTS Art (e.g. daniel johnson ROOTS Art) by September 29, 2018 at 11:59pm CST. Please format as such:

- Selected artists will be responsible for shipping or delivering their work by October 25th. Significant Developments will pay the return shipping costs.
- All artists whose work is displayed will receive a $50 honorarium from Alternate ROOTS as a token of our appreciation for your participation in this exhibition.
- Preference will be given to those who live in Mississippi, and the surrounding region, including Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Tennessee. ROOTS will also prioritize entries from members of First Peoples, Native, and Indigenous communities, trans people of color, and youth.
