2016 marks Alternate ROOTS’ 40th Anniversary!

40 years!!! To really celebrate we are having a blowout Super ROOTS-y Reunion Spectacular on Friday and Saturday of ROOTS Week. It will be a one-of-a-kind gathering for artists and cultural organizers, and their families, in the mountains of North Carolina. This event includes two days of performances, story sharing, good food, visual arts installations, a late-night cabaret, spontaneous dance parties and singing! We’ll also have plenty of unscheduled space to savor this, our 40th gathering of activists and artists. This promises to be a reunion of ROOTers from way back, folks whose lives got busy and we haven’t seen in a while, and people who grew up at ROOTS, all coming to the mountain to celebrate the mission, vision, and future of this amazing organization.

On Friday night we’ll be recognizing the companies and individuals who are listed in our by-laws as the founders of Alternate ROOTS: Little Marrowbone Repair Corp., The Road Company, Academy Theater, Ensemble Theater, Roadside Theater, Florida Studio Theater, The Play Group, Carpetbag Theater, New World Theater Company, Sidewalk Dance Theater, Free Southern Theater, Pocket Theater, Otrabanda Company, Birmingham Festival Theater, Hippodrome Theater, Margaret Gregg, Jo Carson, Kelly Hill, Robin Foster, Liesel Flashenberg and Nancy Terry.

The relationships and connections made in August stretch back to 1976, and will extend deep into the future. The Reunion will be a time to learn and reflect on our past as well as plant seeds for our next 40 years. By gathering together, building new and cultivating old connections, we continue to move the work of social change forward.

August will be a deep, rich, heart-filled, thought-filled experience. We look forward to seeing you on the mountain!
