As a way of showing our collective love and gratitude to Carlton Turner and his 14 years of service to ROOTS, we have created Seeds to ROOTS. This annual spring fundraiser will – at Carlton’s request – support rural artists across all of ROOTS programming. Seeds to ROOTS honors Carlton’s commitment to the rural South, and will be used to benefit artists and organizers whose work cultivates creativity and community, justice and equity, in rural places.

While Carlton traveled the country as ROOTS’ executive director, he continued planting seeds in the Mississippi soil. And now he’s returning to this work full time, building up his community through arts and agriculture via the Mississippi Center for Cultural Production. Carlton is a strong voice for rural people and places, and Seeds to ROOTS builds on this legacy.

Seeds contain the promise of what lies ahead. We gather them from past harvests and plant them in the earth each spring, in preparation for an abundant and sustaining future. Seed planting is an act of gratitude, hope, and continuation. The first thing to sprout from a seed is the root.

In this spirit, we invite you to give to Seeds to ROOTS, in honor of Carlton, and in support of arts activism rural communities throughout the South.
