Uplifting Southern Voices: A Celebration of Local Art

The South is a region rich in culture, history, and creativity. At Alternate ROOTS, we are dedicated to uplifting the voices of Southern artists who reflect the complexity and beauty of this region. Through their work, they challenge stereotypes, confront injustices, and celebrate resilience.

One example is ROOTS member Darren Wilson, whose spoken word performances explore the intersections of Black identity and Southern heritage. His work is deeply personal yet universally resonant, giving voice to experiences often overlooked. Audiences leave inspired, with a deeper understanding of what it means to live in the South today.

Southern artists also play a critical role in preserving cultural traditions. From Gullah storytelling to Appalachian folk music, our members ensure these rich histories are passed down. ROOTS supports these efforts through grants, workshops, and mentorship programs, allowing these traditions to evolve while remaining rooted in their origins.

The diversity of Southern art is something to celebrate. Visual artists, dancers, filmmakers, and playwrights—all contribute to a vibrant cultural landscape. ROOTS’ annual gatherings provide a platform for these creatives to connect, collaborate, and showcase their work, fostering a sense of community.

As we amplify Southern voices, we honor the region’s legacy while building a brighter future. Alternate ROOTS is proud to stand alongside these artists, ensuring their stories are heard far and wide.
