It’ll Take Some Tellin’, ROOTS’ years-in-the-making book project is a collection of critical essays, personal stories, interviews, story circles and graphic narratives. The book follows the organization’s journey as an intentional, artist-led community rooted across the South and emerging out of the social movements of the ‘60s and ‘70s, that grew to be a leader in the field of arts, community, and activism.

We are hiring for the following contract positions to support the ROOTS Book project:

  • Developmental Editor (part-time, contract)
  • Production Coordinator (part-time, contract)

The Developmental Editor’s focus is on the book’s big picture. This role could be filled by an individual or a team. Their job is to answer three basic questions:

  1. Content: Is there important information that is missing? What additional writing is needed to tell a coherent story?
  2. Meaning: Do the individual chapters hang together to make a unified whole? Can they flow or fold into one another in a way that will make sense to a reader?
  3. Structure: How should the chapters be sequenced? What introductions or context statements will ground the reader?

The Developmental Editor position is a part time contract position that is fully remote. Compensation is $50/hour with a minimum of 100 hours and a maximum of 200 hours over the course of the contract.
