Alternate ROOTS seeks candidates for Development Associate

Job Description

The Development Associate is part-time, and is responsible for supporting the overall fundraising goals. The position is 30 hours a week with 8 hours weekly to be spent working collaboratively with staff members as needed based on program activity.

Responsibilities 

The Development Associate reports to the Managing Director, and will work closely with the Executive Director. Responsibilities of the Development Associate will include:   

Foundation Support

  • Acquire data and create first draft, interim, and final grant reports
  • Primarily responsible for writing grant narratives with support from the Executive Director and Managing Director
  • Submit grant applications to foundations and funders
  • Grant Compliance including communication of funding requirements to appropriate staff; ensuring the timely submission of required statistical and narrative reports; assisting with program reporting when necessary; and outcome data review for compliance with funding requirements during the life of the grant.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date donor/grant files, deadlines, and records/database
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date grants calendar, and send notifications as needed to internal staff for deadlines, grant reports, and new grant opportunities
  • Conduct ongoing research related to institutional funders
  • Conduct ongoing sponsorship and donor opportunities research
  • Attend grant-writing conferences, seminars, and professional development opportunities to gain expertise and connect with others working in this role in the nonprofit sector.

Individual Giving

  • Support the Managing Director’s planning and execution of giving campaigns and events
  • Schedule meetings as needed (internal staff meeting/external funder meetings upon request)
  • Manage process for sending thank you notes to all donors in a timely manner
  • Work with Operations Manager to ensure tax letters are sent
  • Person hired will be requested to attend ROOTS Week, August 6-12, 2018.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

People who apply for the Fundraising/Development Associate position should:

  • Have a passion for, and strong commitment to, development work, and a history of fundraising experience in the arts and/or social justice sectors
  • Have a strong work ethic; be collaborative, conscientious, and results and detail-oriented
  • Be honest, trustworthy, exhibit sound judgment, and abide by strict confidentiality guidelines
  • Flexible to function well in a team structure
  • Work independently and be self-motivated
  • Ability to work from home/remotely
  • Ability to travel 20% of the time

Basic Skills Required

  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills
  • Good grant writing and documentation skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite especially Word and Excel
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, with emphasis on Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Proficient in Google Suite, with emphasis on google docs, sheets and GQueues
  • Ability to perform basic research using internet and other tools
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience in fundraising, calendar management, and grant writing/reporting

Location

Alternate ROOTS has a remote office, and collaborates using a series of digital tools. The Development Associate can work remotely anywhere in the Alternate ROOTS region.* There are ROOTS staff members in Atlanta, GA, New Orleans, LA, Houston, TX, and Jackson, MS.

Hours

The position is a non-exempt position that will work between 30 hours a week with 8 hours weekly dedicated to remote collaboration through online platforms with team members as needed based on program activity.

Compensation and Benefits
This is a termed hourly employee position paid at a rate of $18.25. ROOTS has secured funding for the position May 15, 2018 –  June 1, 2019, and may be subject to renewal pending additional funding.
