“We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there “is” such a thing as being too late. This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr

Our 2020 theme – The Fierce Urgency of Now – is inspired by these words from Dr. King’s 1967 speech, “Beyond Vietnam – A Time to Break Silence.”

ROOTS Week 2020: Reimagined!

As we’ve reimagined what virtual ROOTS Week can be, we’ve allowed more time and spaciousness for us to gather together. This multi-week event of programming will include:

Three consecutive weekends of workshops, performances, keynotes, and conversations:

  • Sep 18-20, Sep 25-27, Oct 2-4, 2020

Each day will consist of three sessions: one in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Each session will be approximately 2 hours long.

Pod-organized UpROOTing space, Porch Sittin’, art creation, and self-organized gathering space in the two “sandwich” weeks (Sept 21-24 and Sept 28-Oct 1) in addition to 3 programmed events during both “sandwich” weeks (Sept 21-24 and Sept 28-Oct 1) curated by ROOTS Week Staff.

Voting in of new voting members will take place on the last weekend of ROOTS Week on October 4, 2020.

Missed a session or LATE Night event? Check out the videos of some of the sessions on the Howlround platform HERE!

Alternate ROOTS supports the creation and presentation of original art that is rooted in communities of place, tradition or spirit. We are a group of artists and cultural organizers based in the South creating a better world together. As Alternate ROOTS, we call for social and economic justice and are working to dismantle all forms of oppression—everywhere.
